Here's a trick you possibly don't know yet: I've found that many photos on this site are posted at an unnecessary low jpg compression (preserves high quality, but increases file size).

I just load those pictures into an image editor and save them at 75 or 80 (of 100) jpg compression; they come out visually almost indiscernible from the originals, but sometimes only at half the filesize.

Only at very large magnifications (like 5x) there are visible differences.

Very much depends on the background, though; many little details like trees with their leaves blow up filesize; the jpg algorithm just cannot work very effectively on such detailed pictures.

A very nice tool for scaling up or down is PhotoZoom with many options for increasing picture quality. NOT free, though -- sigh...
