Tips on Improving Dark Video?

Perhaps, I could post this on more appropriate video editing forums, but I suspect some of you have some expertise in this area?

I have several videos of my wife with different bulls in our bedroom. Most of these sessions start out while it's still light out and the video quality is good. They are usually long sessions and multiple ones that go until morning.

So I have clips of the beginning and the end that are great, but a lot that get darker as the sun sets.

Does anyone have any tips for improving the quality of these dark videos? I realize there are sessions where it is just too dark. But most have some light. Again, a lot start out great and get darker as the sun sets.

Currently I use VLC. There is an "Effects and Filters" tool that you can adjust in real time. This doesn't have a lot of effect. In VLC there is a another place where you have a lot of different options and after spending hours I made some improvements. And somehow I've managed to lose those few edits after changing computers.

Sorry for the long post. But I figured someone has had to deal with this issue, and with basically the same set of circumstances (bedroom, fixed hidden camera, and natural light that darkens until sunset) unlike other tutorials of videos that are outside or in other completely different settings.

Ideally, I'm looking for advice like this:

Try setting parameters A, B, and C to X, Y, and Z, or even some automatic filter or script that can be applied.

Most tips I see say "Play with these settings", but all these parameters impact each other and again, my "stage" so to speak is probably similar to many of yours.

Again, I'm using VLC, but would be open to other software (I don't have a large budget).

PS. The darker the video the more pixelated it becomes. Not necessarily pixelated, but you can see blurry groups of shapes that are moving.

I forgot to mention, I think the best results I got involved chopping the video into individual image frames and applying some script on the batch of images. The images themselves were surprisingly good. All of sudden, a once almost completely dark video had magically came to life, transforming into a set of bright images of my wife, legs up like bunny ears, getting fucked by a black bull. Not perfect quality by any means, but it demonstrated it can be done.

But you have to transform those images back into a video and reintegrate the sound. At some point I gave up and I don't where I saved those image frames. Also, I think the images weren't of every single frame.

Try playing with Windows Media Player, then pause the video and right click on the image, choose enhancements, video settings, and turn brightness to full on. You can also play with contrast and other settings to get the best effects.
