Hehe well normally with a Mic, because sound is analog and you need a mic of some sort to pickup the soundwaves. Then the question is, OK, I have the Mic so I can collect the soundwaves, Now where do I put them? Best answer for most people nowadays is their computer's hard drive.

Its cheap around 180 Euros and has a builtin mics (stereo & good quality) and records as wav or mp3.

I've been using the voice memo feature on my iPhone to capture audio, but it's usually too quiet. I can boost the volume in Quicktime, but then I get that dreaded static noise in the background. Is there a good way to filter that out?

Yes there are. I would recommend a free program out there call Audacity. It will allow you to edit and modify the audio, as well as gain-staging and noise reduction. It's not a truly professional program but it's pretty damn good considering it's free.

If you're going to use your iphone, use an external mic. Some of the headsets have pretty good mics - make sure it's a mic for iPhone, it's different from a normal pc mic.
