I've just been told that my friend, who I have been in love with for 11 years, is going to marry her partner. Excellent advice! Here are a few ideas for embracing the pain:

- Make it a rule not to ever come except when looking at their wedding photos or (until those are available) their invitation/announcements, etc.
- Keep a wedding photo - or a photo of them together, by your bed so it is the last thing you see at night and the first thing in the morning.
- Even better, have a poster blow-up of their wedding photo made to put opposite your bed.
- Get them a big gift. Not so over the top that they think you've lost it, but one that is really thoughtful and significant for you financially. The more it is a romantic couple thing (without getting creepy) the better.
- While you are at it, get them a similarly substantial engagement gift. And don't forget her shower. If she is traditional and doesn't invite you, that doesn't mean you can't send something.


I can also think of some over-the-top things, but I'm betting you don't want to hear them.

My thoughts are that you need to be very carefull with the whole thing. Friendships do mean a lot and sometimes are not worth the temptations. But then again, I let my best friend fuck my wife on and off for about a year, he and I are still best of friends even though they don't fuck anymore.
