Date: 13th century
: a man whose wife is unfaithful
The origins of the word may be linked to the cuckoo bird's behavior--it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, and its chicks are raised by the other birds as their own.
The image associated with the cuckold is the cuckold's horns. There doesn't seem to be a clear sense of how the idea of horns became associated with the idea of cuckoldry. But it is a long-standing association that holds true in several languages. When a married woman has sexual relations outside of marriage, her husband is said to sprout horns (figuratively). The references to horns, then, are highly charged with implications that a man has been humiliated by his wife's infidelity. Below are some images of cuckolds to show the concept. In the first, the betrayed husband has actually sprouted horns; in the second, the seducer of the woman on the couch is drawing a cuckold's horns on her husband's portrait.
