That's actually not a bad way to get it out there! At least that way you can gauge her initial reaction. If she recoils in horror, then you have a tough road ahead if you wanted to make it reality. But if she laughs with you, then you know it's a subject that she doesn't find offensive.
You might want to bring it up more... and again in a joking way. Eventually she might comment, and ask if there's some reason you keep mentioning it. Once she does that, then the door is open and you can lead into that subtle, "Well since you brought it up, and if I can be totally honest with you, there is something I'd like to tell you....".
Don't worry about "being ready". You'll have plenty of time to get ready. The process can take a year, or two, or more. Even if she was open to discussing the idea today, it takes a woman a long time to adjust to it, and even longer to move it toward reality.
