Obama was born and had 30 years in Hawaii. Hawaii's cultural attitude toward race is VERY different than mainland U.S.
That's why many mainlanders who come to Hawaii to live, rarely stay more then a year. It is very difficult to make the cultural adjustment to this "Melting Pot of the Pacific". Interracial relationships are the norm. Same race relationships are the oddity, esp. among the younger age groups.
So Obama mindset is basically rural Hawaiian. The kind of guy who gives you half his rice from his kau-kau tin (lunch can) because you alazz (don't have any). With the notion he doesn't have to eat a full lunch today because he will eat dinner that night.
