And, it's true. For example, the "N" word: If you are black and living in the inner city, you can use the word to refer to a friend and it would be taken as a compliment (see hip-hop music) or might be used to simply refer to another black permister without any negative implications. However, if you are a white permister and you use the word to refer to a black permister, even a friend, that would almost certainly be interpreted as an insult in all but a very few circumstances. The word is the same, but its meaning and how it is interpreted is different--because the word only has the meaning and power that WE attach to it.
My wife, whose original language was not English, and I were very big fans of Lenny Bruce and George Carlin before we met and we both subscribed to Lenny's take on the power and meaning of words. Additionally, coming from the rather unusual backgrounds that we each came from, we were both very familiar with being social "outsiders" and the way that society uses labels--ie. words--to reflect its approval and disapproval of people, ideas, lifestyles, etc. that don't conform to societal "norms". We both knew this before we met and decided not to have a "traditional" monogamous marriage.
When my wife and I decided to get married, we also decided that our marriage would not be monogamous--that once we got comfortable and were secure in our relationship with one another, we would "open" our marriage up and allow one another to have sex with other people. As products of the "free love" and "hippie" movements as well as a more tolerant European view of sex, this was not as strange an idea as it may sound to those who may have grown up in a traditional American circumstance over the last 30 years. I didn't think of my wife as a "slut" for wanting to have sex with other men any more than she thought of me as a "slut" for wanting to have sex with other women: to us, this was just normal. After all, human beings are the only species on Earth that can have and enjoy sex whenever we want without that sexual activity necessarily being tied to procreation. So, why shouldn't we take advantage of this unique human capacity?!?!
When we ultimately decided to "open" our marriage, we agreed that we would not have sex with other people without one another's knowledge. As a result, in our view, neither one of us has ever "cheated" on the other. At first, we primarily met with other couples and a few select single men (for threesomes, which my wife really enjoyed). In our view, that is something that she (and her husband, partner, lover) should be PROUD of!
Similarly, in our view, a "whore" is nothing more than a "slut"--ie a woman who enjoys having sex with multiple partners--who has, on occasion, allowed herself to be paid--ie financially compensated in some way--to do so. By this definition, a lot of "straight", "upstanding" women and wives are "whores", too--they just won't admit it. Does it really matter if a woman will only have sex with a man for $ 100 or if she will only have sex with a man who takes her out to dinner, a movie and dancing and spends $ 100 on her doing so? In either event, the guy is spending $ 100 to have sex with her--the difference is only in the manner in which she is receiving the money. If a group of guys all chip in $ 50 to get a hotel room, takes and snacks, and pay for a woman's transportation so that they can have sex with her, what's wrong with that? Technically, since they're all paying specifically to have sex with her, she is being a "whore" if she has sex with them. Yet, why shouldn't she (and her husband, partner, lover, etc.) feel proud that the guys are willing to do that? That they are all willing to ante up their hard earned money to have sex with her instead of with their wives, girlfriends, a date or any other woman? In our view, if they--or anyone else--call her a "whore", she (and her husband, partner, lover, etc.) should take it as a COMPLIMENT!
And, that's how my wife and I both choose to see it. While I don't look at my wife and think of her as a "slut" or as a "whore" (regardless of the adjectives attached)--I just see her as the permister that she is--the fact is that she is a "slut" and a "whore" and, if anyone were to call her that, we would take it as a compliment as well as a statement of fact. And, because I enjoyed everything that my wife did with other men (if anything, I wish she had done more), I'm glad that my wife is a "slut" and a "whore". And, she was and is proud of being one!
My only regret is that illness and health issues have prevented us from continuing to do the kinds of things that we enjoyed doing with others so much for a number of years now. We both wish that that was not the case.
