I've found quite a few studies and discertations on that over the years. We're taught that women want stable, monogamous relationships with a man... and they do.
However... that same man doesn't necessarily have to be the father of their children! Remember, much of our instinctive programming originated over millions of years, from times when we were nomadic hunter/gatherers.
Women relied on men for protection, food, etc. It was in their best interest to select a mate that would protect and care for them and their children. When choosing a long-term mate, women preferred men who would stick around and provide for her. This was more important that just physical prowess.
On the other hand, there were males that were more physically fit, attractive, etc. Because one can't "see" the genetic makeup of a mate, nature has programmed us to use outward, physical attributes as an indication of health. i.e. - good looking = good genes.
A tall, muscular, attractive male is physically appealing to a woman, even though he may not be good long-term mate material. Theoretically, these superior males would have their choice of women, would be more nomadic and less driven to choose one female and settle down. He played the field, because he could.
Now... even though the female may have a long-term mate that would care for her and her offspring, the urge to mate with the superior, physical mate was strong. It was also in the best interest of the species, and ensured genetic diversity. So... it is theorized that, given enough time and opportunity to sneak behind a bush somewhere, the female would be tempted to mate with the more attractive male.
You can make an analogy to todays society. Good guys vs. Bad Boys, women marry Good Guys but fantasize about Bad Boys, etc. Bad Boys will always be cheaters, and run around.
There's even some inkling of how the Cuckold fetish may have originated... with males & females in long-term relationships, with the constant threat of the "superior, nomadic" male breeding the female... possibly even siring offspring, which are then raised by the long-term male, etc.
How much of the theory is real, how much is speculation. I dunno... it's interesting reading, though.
