The new novel The Act of Love by Howard Jacobson, about a man who urges his wife to cuckold him, is getting a lot of attention in the media. Anybody read it?

"No man has ever loved a woman, and not imagined her in the arms of someone else," he assures us. "No husband is ever happy – truly, genitally happy, happy at the very heart of himself as a husband – until he has proof positive that another man is fucking her."

No, actually I haven't. Is it any good?

I was thinking of self-publishing such a book, but not set in modern times.

Anybody think there would be interest in such a book, apart from the usual curiosity?

Maybe it would be an idea to select a theme to run through a book, then divide into 12 chapters, and select a writer from 12 countries to donate a chapter and we split costs on publisihng and see what happens?

The Act of Love is a serious, very literary novel. I didn't like it, because I felt no empathy with the main protagonist, Felix, who is a very middle class character who operates with a lack of warmth and almost clinical detachment.In fact none of the characters seem at all appealing.

There is a sting in the tail, though.

Incidentally, has anybody read 'Cuckold' by Amber Leigh(a pseudonym, I think)? Sounds more of a wank novel from the blurb..
