God how I hated that arrogant prick, but he had a point. Not only could he prove I had "borrowed" company money that I could not pay back, but he had incriminating tapes of me with a female employee. Nothing but a little harmless role play, but he had edited it to look nonconsentual. Nothing I wanted to explain to anyone, thats for sure. No way to make the embezzlement thing go away, either.

My relief was tempered by the certainty that there would be strings attached, but at least there was a ray of hope. I had been kind of hard on the guy when he started with the firm, but somehow his younger, more aggressive style had led to the promotion I had expected for myself. Now he had me standing in front of his desk, and there was nothing I could do about the nasty smirk on his face.
"What I want you to do, and this is your one chance before I call Security, is to walk right out of here without saying one single word. Go explain the situation to that hot little wife of yours. If you can manage somehow to get her to come in and ask if there is a way to work things out...well, we will see, won't we?"
