"What is he doing in there?" I whispered. I knew without looking that my wife would also be awake - she was a much lighter sleeper than me. I suddenly remembered how as a child my father would sometimes come into my bedroom to tell me off for trampolining on the bed; I was now struck with a funny image of me having to go into the guest bedroom to do the same to him. I turned to share the joke with my wife. She wasn't there.
